Hannah Peterson is a filmmaker living and working in Los Angeles. She is a recent graduate of the MFA program in Film Directing at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and has worked closely with filmmakers Sean Baker and Chloé Zhao. Filmmaker Magazine named Hannah as one of 25 new faces of independent film in 2018. Her film, East of the River, was a recipient of the Panavision New Filmmaker grant. East of the River premiered at Slamdance Film Festival 2019 where it won a jury honorable mention and Hannah was awarded the Russo brothers fellowship.
"In East of the River, their desultory hanging is captured in handsomely composed widescreen frames that don’t stifle the vibrancy of the very real teenagers onscreen. Peterson doesn’t force a dramatic arc onto this wasted day: No lessons are learned or major changes experienced. Despite some low-key tensions, River chooses experiential immersion over artificial conflict." - Filmmaker Magazine
“While most films made in D.C. stick to the historical landmarks and paint the city as little more than an iconic backdrop for political intrigue, Peterson's decision to cast real D.C. teens and use the less visible locations where they actually hang out with will create a slice of fiction that brings Washington to life on the big screen.” - DCist
“If you want an inner city coming-of-age story starring real teenagers, go see East of the River” -REFINERY29
